Description: Under direct supervision, prepares & processes tissue specimens for microscopic examination by a Pathologist. Duties include embedding, cutting, & staining a wide variety of tissue specimens. Essential Functions: - Laboratories: Mix ingredients & perform quality assurance procedures - Prepare solutions, diagnostic test reagents, surgical tissue specimens, & tissue & bone sections - Sort & chill tissue blocks - Sort, number, & label specimens in specified sequence - Embed tissue - Examine media for physical defects - Examine reagents for contamination, impurities or instability - Maintain microtome blades - Prepare frozen section slides & control slides - Stain microscopic slides - Store specimens in freezer - Set up specimen tests & controls for interpretation - Clean work area - Dispose properly of laboratory specimens & waste material - Wash laboratory glassware & instruments - Read & assess control slides - Perform special histochemical techniques & plastic techniques - Records & Patient Information: Read & assess control slides - Consult w/ pathologist concerning lab techniques - Look up & report test results as requested - Prepare lab worksheets - File slides & tissue cards - Maintain current records of all testing - Record & maintain daily log & files of complete studies - Record & maintain records of equipment usage, Quality Control Record sheets, & previous maintenance sheets - Equipment & Instruments: Calibrate & adjust equipment in preparation for & during procedures - Clean, lubricate & perform routine preventive maintenance - Maintain equipment in good working order - Materials & Supplies: Maintain & order supplies - Properly dispose of waste materials - Properly dispose of contaminated or biohazardous materials - Maintain solutions, chemicals & automatic equipment - Replenish supplies & equipment - Administrative & Other: Serve as resource person to co-workers by answering procedural questions & assisting in problem solving - Answer telephones & take messages - Assumes other activities & responsibilities from time to time as directed Basic Qualifications: - Must possess recent experience with routine and special histopathological techniques - ASCP certification or eligibility required - Consistently demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors necessary to provide superior and culturally sensitive service to each other, to our members, and to purchasers, contracted providers, and vendors Notes: - Willing to cover hours from early morning to early evening. - This is a on call position that will asked to cover vacations and sick calls Primary Location: California,San Diego,San Diego Medical Center 4647 Zion Ave. Scheduled Weekly Hours: 0 Shift: Variable Workdays: Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri, Sat, Sun Working Hours Start: Varies Working Hours End: Varies Job Schedule: Call-in/On-Call Job Type: Standard Employee Status: Regular Employee Group/Union Affiliation: OPEIU - Local 30 Job Level: Individual Contributor Job Category: Laboratory Department: Histology Travel: No Kaiser Permanente is an equal opportunity employer committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce.
